2nd Flight Sim Competition - Sign up thread

Postby Wedgy » Sat Jan 17, 2009 4:39 pm

Continuing from the previous competition thread, I confirmed there would be a 2nd ;)

The "challenge" is yet to be decided, but some of the criteria is below.
Note: Making sure we can include EVERYONE with FS9 and FSX this time with DEFAULT aircraft. (those with other simulators can enter, if they have similar scenery and aircraft that are required for the challenge).

Wedgy wrote:oh yes :)

Plan to use a FS9/FSX default aircraft for something else.

Looking at wikipedia, this is a list of FSX default aircraft ... the ones highlighted in red are also available in FS9, so will go with one of those ;)

Airbus A321
Air Creation 582-SL Trike Ultralight
Beechcraft Baron 58
Beechcraft King Air 350
Bell 206B JetRanger
Boeing 737-800
Boeing 747-400
Bombardier CRJ-700
Bombardier Learjet LJ-45
Cessna 208-B Grand Caravan
Cessna 172S SkyhawkSP
de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver floatplane
DG-808-S Competition Sailplane
Douglas DC-3
Extra EA-300-S
Mooney M-20-M Bravo
Piper J-3C-65 Cub
Robinson R-22 Beta II

Who's up for this .... purely for judging interest for now. :)

I have a few ideas .... it will involve a challenge that 1 screen shot can easily determine how well you performed ;)

Doubt it will start for a week or so. Then run for around 2 weeks (to give everyone a chance), the last one ran a little too long ;)

i think we should do something in DC3s - and if she's not going to participate, perhaps get Hihoney123xyz (Helen!) to adjudicate?

Mayfly - do you think your resident Dak-driver might like to think up a flying/skill challenge? :D

Howza 'bout:

Best landing of a DC-3/Dakota/Skytrain/C-47 on the
deck of an aircraft carrier and/or taking off?

Dramatic FAILURES could also be entered in a separate
category.

Might even be a nice YouTube compilation in there to
attract NEW MEMBERS!

they are in the default scenary ;) Although that isnt the case in FS9 so we would be excluding them :(

you have to make sure that your graphics are turned up enough first - basically "medium high" for most settings. Wedgy's the best to ask regarding location - he's found two so far, but i have no idea where we were! =))

There is an aircraft carrier in the default FS9 scenery. You need to take off from San Fransisco International and head west. You'll then find the USS Kittyhawk. I'll let you know if I can get on to it.

Check it has a "hard-deck", if so, I have a feeling that is also in FSX .... then we are a go :D

Edit: Confirmed, it is in both FS9 and FSX:
There is a single aircraft carrier in the default scenery of FS2004, namely the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63). The carrier has no navigational aids and no functionality of catapult and arrestor cables.

To reach the carrier takeoff from San Francisco Airport (KSFO) and head west. After reaching the ocean you'll be able to locate the carrier. Alternatively from KSFO fly VOR 115.80 outbound for 13.5 nm on radial 288.

The angled runway of the deck is at heading 064 while the carrier movement is at heading 074.

Well, a DC3 would have no use for catapult and arrestor cables ;) Just need to find out if it has a hard deck or do you sink through it :D

I'll get back to you in the morning. I've been practicing in my Chippie and have had to go around twice so far even though I could have made the last one a bolter :( . I've saved the flight and I'll have a shot in the morning to see if it's solid.

EDIT: I couldn't wait for the morning. Approach no 3 was a bolter as I was a bit long (probably wire 20 of 4 :ymblushing: ). Definitely a solid deck. :D Looks like it could be a goer. :)

WHEW!

This ought to be verrrry interesting!

I did notice one piece of advice on Stevie's link
from a carrier pilot who uses it to practice:

"A good approach is a good landing!"

Sounds like words to live by to me......

Okay, Wedgemeister, time to lay-down the rules
and regs! Little did I know you guys'd actually
take me SERIOUSLY!

Down, but not a lot of deck left. I use FSX so the deck is solid.

Had to go to a cessna skyhawk to keep the approach speed down. #:-s

Do we need maybe some Champeen Flight Simmer
to try this out and see iffin it's even possible with
a Dakota?

Gotta tell you, I didn't think I'd EVER get interested
in flight simming. NOW look what you've done!

Beat me to it RLN. :)

It's going to be a few late nights to get a Dak down. :p

Can I suggest setting up a 40 knots headwind in the weather settings to simulate the carrier moving at 30 knots into a 10 knot wind to help us and to simulate what you'd be getting if you were trying to land on a carrier? - pleeeeeeeease ;)

Dunno if this will be helpful or not...

Just pulled these figures off the internet re: Dakota,
and if the sim aircraft duplicate this, it might be
of use.

Takeoff speed is +/- 80 mph and 850 feet of runway
required to clear a 50 ft. obstacle.

Stall speed with gear and flaps extended is 67 mph.

Landing approach is typically 90 to 100 mph with full
flaps and requires 2,600 feet (!) of runway.

These are all for no-wind conditions.

Sounds like T/O way easier than T/D.

Dan4th

EDIT: Looks as if any landing will HAVE to be into the wind
and slower than the typical landing speed. One thing to
avoid will be the dreaded DC-3 "Bounce". This is really
going to take some skill! Or luck.........

I have seen FS videos on youtube of 747s being landed on a/c carriers so I would think a DC3 would be possible B-)

Edit:It can be done, took me about 15 minutes :D

Great stuff. Will get some rules and regs up - and we are go ;)

Im not sure about the windspeed - I will try and test ... last time I did that, it blew me off the carrier AFTER I had landed and stopped =))
