IA's 1st Flight Simulator Competition!

Postby Wedgy » Thu Dec 11, 2008 3:17 pm

Inspired by the amazing photos of 'Victor Mike' - the last Standard VC10 in BA service, flying at stupidly low altitude and crazy speed .......

Image

The challenge
Recreate the event in the flight simulator of your choice.

Rules
BA VC10 preferred, but other variations are allowed (if you don't have a VC10 for FS9/FSX PM me)
Unlimited attempts allowed
Photographic/video proof required
Tower view preferred, but a low level F11 view accepted
Crash settings must be ON
You must number each attempt sequentially, carrying on the number sequence if you return for more attempts at a later date.
Dan4th is hereby appointed judge (he doesn't know it until he sees this :D )

Prize
Pure glory and the entitlement to look down upon those "inferior" flight sim amateurs :D

FS9 users can download a VC10 for free from here http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=38588
You may need to register, but its free ;)

FSX users without a VC10 just drop me a PM :)

Wedgy:

I think the nose-up problem is due to the FSX not
reproducing the ground-effect "lift" that you'd
have in "real life", whatever THAT is....

Thanks to Wedgie for sending me the link for the FS9 download for VC10 this afternoon. Had a go this evening and not only is it a lovely looking aeroplane but relatively easy to to fly (need to take into account my abject ineptitude here). Here's my first attempt on my first flight out of LAX (only because the approach is over the sea allowing me the confidence to approach lowish). I've not sorted out video yet but here's a screenshot (plus a shot of climb away just to show that I didn't go tunnelling). I'll practice a bit more before having a go at mowing the lawn.

nice one SB - she's a lovely bird to fly isn't she? stacks of power and as stable as anything.

one tiny comment on your snaps though - you seem to have your spoilers out (the flaps on top of the wings) - they're fab for slowing down, but make you drop like a stone - they're not called "lift spoilers" for nothing! =))

i bet you struggled to climb didn't you?

Have to come clean. Left the spoilers out to allow me to keep lots of power on but keep the speed down and nose up (too many years flying gliders I'm afraid). Popped them away on climb out.

i keep deploying them without realising - the button's on the side of my joystick base and i keep nudging it - then i wonder why I'm not going anywhere :((

it would be handy to have a warning light on the panel when they're deployed - the Vulcan has one.

in real life though, poor old Standard VC10 prototype G-ARTA suffered rather badly when the spoilers were deployed too soon on landing at LGW in 1972, causing the final few feet of landing to be little more than a plummet.........

Image

Image

she hung around for a while at LGW whilst B.Cal decided whether a repair was economical or not - here's their answer - 1975.....

Here you go. My second attempt. No spoilers this time SM. Flown from cockpit view for extra sweat then replayed.

Then the climb out as evidence that I got away with the appaling airmanship.

Image

Lovely model to fly. Just needs a glass cockpit to make it easier for an old man's eyes.

We all got too low and hit the deck and burnt to death :(

*Wedgy talking from the grave*

Still having trouble installing?
Just find the same directories in your FSX folder as are in the ZIP file and copy them across ;)

Tom I think when I did mine, tho I had help, I had 3 files once unzipped - Aircraft, Effects & DMFS shared files the first 2 are obvious & the DMSF shared files also go in the aircraft folder
